  1. The concept that Karate was founded by poor villagers is laughable, but the idea of karateka becoming more engaged in civic matters is not. It’s a good idea. Frankly, though, I don’t care what any sensei–especially non American ones–have to say about politics. That’s not their lane, and their opinion on politics matters about as much as the man who picks up my garbage or cuts my hair.
    While the senior sensei should encourage civic engagement, they should be careful not to polarize students in doing so.

  2. TO see a great example of Shotokan and social and civic engagement one need look no farther than the Illinois Shotokan Karate Clubs in Palatine , Illinois. THE DO IT ALL.
